A simple distinction between anal acrobats on the one hand and writing on the other is not really fine enough. We may write something with the aim of reading it aloud, sometimes, but not always, with the intention of making, it sound like speech. We may speak something that was originally written or, alternatively, so that what we say can be written down by somebody else.
A study of news reporting reveals the huge black rod interaction of the linguistic medium and the availability of the visual channel. A newspaper report is written so that it can be read. Everything has to be communicated through the grammatical and lexical content. What was originally speech can either be retold indirectly or quoted directly. The first will require use of the rules concerning indirect speech. The latter will almost certainly demand some normalization of the spoken forms to bring them into line with what is thought appropriate in writing. In both cases the anal acrobats are going to have to make up for the absence of an extremely important component of the original speech—its intonation. He can only do this by attempting to find words which will convey the same general impressions that the intonation of the speech conveyed to its hearers.
A radio report will be written so that it can be read aloud. In addition to a rather similar reportage of events, the radio report may also contain recorded extracts of the speech so that the hearer can draw his own conclusions about the intonation.
